Assessment beyond levels

Course Description

Why was the level system removed? Why was it invented in the first place? Why have GCSE exams moved from lettered grades to numbers? What’s the secret companion to the new GCSE exams, that few people know about? Importantly, what does any of this have to do with teaching children?

In a bewildering landscape of conflated assessment and accountability, never before has the onus on teachers to understand the mechanics of effective assessment been so great. How can we know what pupils have learnt, and how can we marry that with preparation for GCSE and A Level exams?

Course Content

1. The Legacy of Levels

In a post-level world, if we are to move forward it is important that we first understand from where we are coming; where we’ve been before. This section will include:

a. Where did the level system come from, and why?

b. Why did it fail, and why was it scrapped?

c. What other legacies has the assessment accountability system left us to contend with?

2. Theory of Assessment

Did you know, it is close to impossible to know what anyone has learned about anything. Yet, every day, teachers, schools and awarding bodies strive to create assessments that seek to tell us exactly that. Do any of them actually work? If so, how good are they? Are some assessments better than others? How can we make better assessments? How do professionally crafted assessments such as GCSE and A Level exams work?

3. Practical Uses of Data

In the end, we've got schools to run. So:

a. What are our main assessment points, and how do assessments need to change at each stage?

b. How can we solve the problems of teacher burnout in our efforts to continually assess and track progress?

c. What’s the difference between using tests to assess, and using tests to teach?
